PROJECT 40 AED - Abitibi-Témiscamingue
In November 2018, Dessercom announced a major investment of $140,000 in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region to install more than 40 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in busy public places frequented by people at greater risk of suffering heart disease. This amount was also used for training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and for the use of these AEDs for people who will have to use these devices.
In Canada, between 35,000 and 45,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest. An AED is a device used to identify the rhythm of the heart and deliver an electrical shock to correct abnormal electrical activity in the heart. The AED provides a convenient and effective way to achieve rapid defibrillation outside of the hospital setting. For every minute of waiting before defibrillation, the survival rate during cardiac arrest decreases by 7% to 10%. After more than 12 minutes of ventricular fibrillation, the survival rate in adults is below 5%. The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends that they have widespread access to automated external defibrillators, especially in locations at high risk for sudden cardiac arrest incidents. That they receive training and are encouraged to use cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the AED when the situation arises.

«Project AED» from Fondation Jacques-de-Champlain
The provincial register of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) developed in 2015 by the Jacques-de Champlain Foundation and its collaborators aims to list all AEDs found in public places in Quebec. Information regarding the location of the AED, how to contact the person in charge of the AED and the expiration dates of certain components such as batteries and electrodes are recorded and kept up to date in the register.
