National Emergency Medical Services Week: expertise in itself in the health network
Lévis, May 24, 2022 – As part of Pre-Hospital Emergency Services and Paramedic Week, which takes place from May 22 to 28, one of the largest employers in the industry, the ambulance company Dessercom, wishes to highlight the exceptional and professional work carried out by its 800 paramedics and administrative employees. Every day, these people strive to help the people of Quebec and the health network in different ways.
Under the theme “the spheres of paramedicine”, the national campaign aims to demystify the expertise of paramedics and the essential role of pre-hospital emergency services (EMS) in health systems. In Quebec, paramedics, formerly called paramedics, have long been associated with their yellow vehicles as their expertise has developed significantly in recent years and especially in recent months. In fact, EMS and paramedics contribute more to public health and the civil security of the Quebec population.
“We can be proud to have highly skilled emergency responders, such as paramedics, to assist communities in dynamic medical situations. “We are witnessing a lot of changes in our industry and it is very motivating! Let us think, among other things, of community paramedicine, a health program administered by paramedics, experts in multi-purpose and extra-hospital care. This concept is very effective in several other Canadian provinces by considerably improving home care,” adds Mr. Marc Bouchard, Director of Operations for the Bas-Saint-Laurent, Capitale-Nationale, Chaudière-Appalaches and Mauricie-Centre-du-Quebec.
“The regions of Quebec will gradually be able to benefit more from the invaluable contribution of paramedics in the service offer of the health network. As front-line actors, they can educate the population about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) or first aid. We will thus be able to prevent rather than cure and save lives in communities far from hospitals or clinics,” says Christian Williams, Director of Operations for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Nord-du-Québec regions.
Paramedics can significantly contribute to the overhaul of the health system through their skills in pre-hospital and extra-hospital care. These professionals are already able to participate in home care and reduce the overload of Quebec hospitals. Their care paradigm is versatile and relies on multidisciplinarity.
